I'm extending the due date of the first DELTAMATH assignment until Monday.
If you haven't completed it, you now have the weekend. THERE ARE 10 OF YOU THAT STILL NEED TO JOIN! PLEASE JOIN!! Class code is 494786 There are notes and examples posted, here on weebly, for combining like terms (including exponents). There will be a second assignment on DELTAMATH, Monday. If you have joined and completed the assignment, you have the weekend off. The rest of you, PLEASE GET IT COMPLETED. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! STAY HEALTHY!!! I'll be looking for you all Monday... Here are notes for combining like terms. We have done some work with this already, however, we will now include exponents. Use these notes, the examples, book examples, your notes, and prior homework to help you with the assignment that be posted MONDAY

You'll have until noon tomorrow (March 10) to complete it. It's on the distributive property... There will be an assignment on Deltamath tomorrow morning.

The distributive property questions on the delta site will have different levels of difficulty. Do your best. Try the more difficult ones, also. The more difficult problems will have exponents. Try them. Remember, that when putting variables together via addition or subtraction, they have to be exactly the same. THE NOTES BELOW SHOULD HELP YOU WITH THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY PROBLEMS THAT HAVE EXPONENTS IN THEM... 2 X + X cannot go together. They are different. Just like X + Y is different. X and Y are cats and dogs... 2 X and X are like two different types of dogs (dobermans and chihuahuas). DO NOT FORCE THEM TOGETHER when adding or subtracting. However, they can be multiplied together. Which you may encounter in the distributive property problems. When multiplying the same variables with different exponents, you add the exponents. 2 3 X * X = X ... We haven't done enough of this, but try those problems when you encounter them. Remember, you are still using SNL when multiplying; Signs, Numbers, and Letters... Example: 2 -3X * 6X= Sign = negative (there's an odd amount of negatives) Numbers= 18 (3 * 6=18) 3 2 3 Letters = X (X * X = X ) ... If there is no exponent for the variable, there is a 1 there. Put all three together... 3 Answer= -18X 2 2 1 Lastly... X * X is the same as X * X . The books, teachers, and tests almost never use the 1 if the exponent is 1. It's just understood to be there. The same as they don't put the 1 in front of variables. It may help you to put the 1 there when dealing with problems that have exponents. WE HAVEN'T DONE MUCH WITH EXPONENTS. WE'LL DO MORE AS WE GO. TRY THE EXPONENT PROBLEMS. DON'T GET DISCOURAGED IF YOU MESS THEM UP... HOWEVER, THESE NOTES SHOULD BE A START TO HELP YOU. There are two assignments for today.

Numbers 9-14 and 20. Check the examples on page 208 and 209. The problems are distributive property problems. However, you may have to simplify the parentheses first. Example 1- 4(x + y) Distribute the 4 through the parenthesis. Answer: 4x + 4y These cannot go together. One term is an x and the other is a y. Example 2- -4(-3 + x) Distribute the negative 4 through the parenthesis. Answer: 12 - 4x This is the final answer. They cannot go together. One term is a constant and the other is an x. Example 3- -4(-10 + 3x + 7) First simplify the parenthesis... The negative 10 and the the positive 7 are constants and can go together. -10 and positive 7 combine to equal -3. After simplifying, the problem now looks like this. -4(-3 + 3x) The parenthesis have been simplified, now you can use the distributive property. -4 multiplied by -3 and -4 multiplied by 3x. This expression is simplified to... 12 - 12x is the final answer. These cannot go together. One term is an x, and the other is a constant. HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!! Page 205 and 206...
11, 12, 14-17, 20. This is still review from last week. You can use notes, homework and examples in the book on page 202 and 203. You are putting like terms together to simplify expressions. First, if there is no multiplication, get one sign for every term. Second, what terms can go together. Third, decide if you are adding or subtracting terms that are "like". Do not force terms together that are not the same. Lastly, some examples (at least one) may require you to plug in a value for the variable. If so, plug in the value and simplify the expression using PEMDAS. Take Home Quiz...
